Caroline Johnson, the founder of SMART, immediately rushed to the scene. Her heart broke the moment she saw Jax. He was so weak he couldn’t stand, his ribs clearly visible through his thin skin. Yet, as she approached, he gazed up at her with soulful, sorrowful eyes, silently pleading for help.
Gently, Johnson lifted him into her arms, wrapped him in a blanket, and placed him in her car. As she drove him to the vet, Jax snuggled closer, eventually crawling into her lap. His eyes never left her, silently thanking her for her compassion.
